By Floyd Allen, Editor, GOD’S GOOD NEWS GAZETTE
I think, before I get into this any farther, I should warn you that there is a very good chance that this particular “thought” might take a while to develop and share. As a result, you may want to get a cold beverage, a big bowl of snacks, arrange yourself as comfortably as possible in whatever chair you are in, and prepare for a good deal of pontification!!!
I want to start by sharing with you the Scriptural proof that we are created uniquely; that God has reasons He created us the way He did; and that He expects us to fulfill His creation plans. The first verse that I want to look at is
Psalm 139:13-14: You alone created my inner being. You knitted me together inside my mother. I will give thanks to you because I have been so amazingly and miraculously made. Your works are miraculous, and my soul is fully aware of this.
As you can see, the Psalmist points out that not only did God create our physical being, He also created our inner being. Like God, we are a trinity. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We are Body, Soul, and Spirit. The best way to describe this, perhaps, is that we are a Spirit that lives in a body and has a soul. That “Inner” being that David was referring to in Psalm 139 is our Spirit, and our Spirit is as unique and individual to us as our Fingerprints or DNA!
David isn’t the only Old Testament character who knew that God had created him virtually at the beginning of time. Jeremiah shares a very similar sentiment with us in Jeremiah 1:4-5 – The LORD gave me this message: “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” Jeremiah’s revelation goes a little further than David’s: Jeremiah was told by God why he was created the way that he was! I want you to stow this away as a deposit in your Memory Bank to be withdrawn a little bit later as you continue reading!
So … God created us uniquely, with different qualities and skills, because …. HE HAS A PURPOSE FOR US! Jeremiah’s purpose was to be a “prophet to the nations.” Later, Jeremiah shares a more generic plan that God has for all of us – Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. And, this is a major reason WE SHOULD BE WHO AND WHAT GOD CREATED US TO BE – He has “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
WOW!!!!! If we are WHO and WHAT God wants us to be, He has plans to prosper us and give us hope and a future!!! Fast forward 500 years or so, and Peter tells us what God expects of His people –
1 Peter 2:9 However, you are chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, people who belong to God. You were chosen to tell about the excellent qualities of God, who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
So, with a little extrapolation we can surmise that God created us uniquely with our special qualities and skills to tell about the excellent qualities of God! The WHO and WHAT we are is to enable us to tell about the excellent qualities of God as only we can! So, WHY SHOULD WE BE WHO AND WHAT GOD CREATED US TO BE? Because when we are we can tell about the excellent qualities of God as only we can!, and that is even more reason to be WHO and WHAT we are!
Remember I had you make a deposit in your Memory Bank to be withdrawn later? Well … it’s later! The “deposit” was “Jeremiah was told by God why he was created the way that he was.” Well, knowing that Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever,” it stands to reason that God can tell us why we are created the way we are. And, that happened with me.
Back in 2001 God led me to become the BIBLE GUY on TV 3’s GOOD MORNING ARIZONA show. After I had done twelve or fifteen shows, God and I had the following conversation:
Me: God, are you sure I am the right person for this job?
God: I sent you, didn’t I?
Me: Well, yes. But why did you send me?
God: You know the verse.
Me (Ducking, in case there might be a Lightning Bolt): I’m the Bible Guy, Lord, I know a lot of verses! which one did You particularly have in mind?
God: The one that says,
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise” (I Cor. 1:27a KJV)
Now, what you may or may not know is that I have been foolish all of my life! My quick wit and amiable personality have made me a legend in my own mind as the “life of the party.” As a result of my obedience to God, not only did I have the opportunity to minister to the entire State of Arizona over a period of several years, I may be one of the few people in this century to know exactly why I was created the way I was created!
At this juncture, I want you to know that the intent of this article is not to encourage you to try to find out why God created you the way He did, it is to convince you to be WHO and WHAT God created you to be! The best way to do that, I believe, is to share some ways my life has been affected because I have, for the entirety of my life, diligently strived to be WHO and WHAT God created me to be!
I have already shared with you about my tenure as THE BIBLE GUY. Before I was a “TV Star,” lonnnngggg before I was a “TV Star,” I was a Radio Personality! Yup … I was a News Broadcaster on WSUP, the college radio station at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh. In fact, by the time the smoke cleared away I had advanced clear up to Assistant News Director, but that’s another story. The thing is, because I was me, the “me” that God had created, I met God’s choice to be my wife!
In late October of my sophomore year of college, WSUP had a party at the lakeside cabin of the parents of Joe Ryan, the station’s president. It was a gala event and a good time was being had by all, when I espied a particularly attractive young lady about fifteen feet away. Remembering I Timothy 1:7 (For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.) I figured that since I wasn’t afraid, and I figured I was in Love, anyone with a sound mind would introduce himself – – so I did! Well, one thing led to another and I discovered that this vision of loveliness had come to the party that night for one reason and one reason only – – – to meet me! Let me explain.
One of the unique ways that God created me deals with my voice. It is, to say the least, highly recognizable!
Ever since she had arrived on campus, this pretty little thing had been listening to my News Broadcasts, and, since the first time she heard it, she had said to herself, “I have to meet the man that voice belongs to.” So, when another member of the Radio Staff invited her to the party she readily accepted, hoping that she would, in fact, meet “The Voice!” Fast forwarding over half a century, that still lovely young lady has been my wife for 49 years!
See – – had I tried to change my voice and sound like Walter Cronkite or Roger Mudd (Yes, Virginia, there really was a Newscaster named Roget Mudd!) I would never have attracted the woman God had intended to be my wife to the party that memorable October night!
Before ending my “thought”, I want to enumerate a few reasons WHY WE SHOULD BE WHO AND WHAT GOD CREATED US TO BE:
- We were created that way for a purpose – – God’s Purpose!
- There is no one else created like us, so we are one of a kind!
- We were created as a Masterpiece, because we are one of a kind!
(Eph. 2:10a – For we are God’s masterpiece. NLV)
- We might as well be us, because everyone else has already taken!
There you have it! The Good News today is being WHO AND WHAT GOD CREATED US TO BE is its own reward, because God planned it exactly that way!!!
