By Floyd Allen, Editor, GOD’S GOOD NEWS GAZETTE
It is a time when we must ensure that we do everything we can to let our light shine bright. More than ever, perhaps, we need to strive to fulfill the dictates of The Great Commission – And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Mark 16:15 And while we know this to be true, we sometimes find it difficult to go around preaching! I know this is true, because I oft times find it difficult, too! Thankfully, do the creativity that God Blessed me with (and has Blessed you, too, by the way!), I have found several ways to fulfill this verse in a manner that has proven neither threatening to those I witness to nor frightening to me!
I refer to the process I use as “Subliminal Witnessing.” What it boils down to is I have found a number of ways that I can introduce God to people in what can only be referred to as innovative and inoffensive ways. I employ these as often as I can, and, fortunately, I find that I get to use one or more of these virtually every day! Following are the methods that I use, and I trust that you will feel free to use as many of these as you think will work for you!
A. My Phone Greeting – If you were to call me tomorrow I would answer the phone, “Good Morning, God Bless You!!!” It doesn’t matter if it is one of my children calling me or a complete stranger – – it is always, “Good Morning, God Bless You!!!” This way, I get to share with people that:
- I know God.
- He can Bless Them
Pretty good Witnessing, ehhh?
(Editor’s Note: I have had what I presume to be Telemarketers immediately hang up! And, most Robo-Calls are not programmed to handle that Greeting, so they say nothing and I just hang up! Pretty neat Bonus, right!)
B. I send a number of E-Mails any given week. Some are Business oriented, but must are personal Regardless of their purpose, however, I use the Following Closing for all of them:
Have a Blessed Day and REMEMBER …
If God be FOR us,
WHO can be AGAINST us!
This time around I am wishing folks a Blessed Day and letting them know how protected we are when we rest in the Hollow of God’s Hand!
C. When I am “out and about,” I never tell people to “Have a Good Day.” Instead, I tell them to “Have a Blessed Day.” The reply I often receive really intrigues me, for more often than not people will say, “God Bless you, too!” However, if you notice, I never said anything about God!!!
What I have surmised is that people are aware of the sentiment of the Doxology, even if they have never heard of it, nor know what it is. The Doxology is, if you would, a call to worship, and goes like this:
- Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
- Praise Him, all creatures here below;
- Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
- Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
You see, man innately knows that all Blessings flow from God!
D. A couple of years ago God spoke to me and told me that I needed to literally follow the dictates of 6:8 – 6 Memorize his laws 7 and tell them to your children over and over again. Talk about them all the time, whether you’re at home or walking along the road or going to bed at night, or getting up in the morning. 8 Write down copies and tie them to your wrists and foreheads to help you obey them. 9 Write these laws on the door frames of your homes and on your town gates. CEV
Well, my wife and I discussed how we were going to accomplish this and, lo and behold, at that time the various dollar stores were selling what looks like the “Wrist Bands” that quarterbacks wear to write down the plays for the game. So, I put together a few Key Verses from The Bible and began wearing them as directed.
These have served several purposes. When people see them for the first time, they ask me if I have injured myself as they do look like a wrist brace. I reply by telling them what it actually is and, in doing so, get to share several of the verses with them!
Other times people ask me how I happened to choose the verses that I did, and I get to give them a mini-sermon right there! All in all, it is pretty neat plan for sharing the Word of God and for God’s dictate to wear His Word/Laws!
(Editor’s Note: I have not yet figured out how to tie them to my forehead! I did learn, however, that in Jerusalem there are shops that sell “hats” of sorts with the laws on the front of them, but I have not yet had the opportunity to buy such headwear! Read on, however, and learn how I have come very close!)
E. If you are reading this you are already aware of the fact that I am, in fact, the Editor of GOD’S GOOD NEWS GAZETTE! What you may not be aware of, however, is that I am a HUGE fan of the Fedora! Compounded with that is the fact that I am more than a tad bit nostalgic. Now, all of that adds up to the fact that when I started GOD’S GOOD NEWS GAZETTE I decided that each and every one of my hats should be graced with a Press Pass in the hat band.
My good friend Mark McCune put together a dandy for me, which includes a large PRESS at the top, and then GOD’S GOOD NEWS in under that. So, as I saunter around town everyone I encounter gets to read my Press Pass! And, frequently, someone will ask me, “What’s the ‘Good News’ for today?” and, of course, I get to tell them!
F. A while ago (years, not months!), a lady in our church introduced a program she called “Sewing Seeds.” It was, I felt, an ingenious way to Witness, so I introduced it to my Subliminal Witnessing Program. What it is, you print out verses of scripture and then distribute them in a myriad of ways, including but not limited to:
- Giving them to Waiters and Waitresses with your tip.
- Putting them in the Envelope when you pay your Bills.
- Handing them out in stores or wherever.
Below are a few examples of the Verses I use. I have them printed on bright, Neon Colored Paper to ensure that they are noticed, and I get to witness without ever saying a word!A variation on this them is accomplished by several friends of mine who write and have printed their own “Tracts” which they then distribute to folks.
G. Each month I E-Mail my friends an exhortation, typically based on a Holiday that occurs during the month. This Exhortation is based on at least one Scripture that allows me to share Jesus and His Love with them!
Now, while many of my friends are Christians, a good number of them are not! Again, this allows me to share the Word of God in a non-offensive manner, but yet allows them to receive the Truth and Hope contained in my E-Mail.
H. My final suggestion may not appeal to you as much as the other seven – – for it may seem to be quite a little less subliminal! Before I can share it, however, I want to give you a little “back story.”
Have you ever noticed that invariably the last song you listen to in your car in the morning is the one that goes through your mind until you hear another? Being an enjoyer of music, I find that I tend to not only have said song in my mind, but on my lips as well!!! So, when I am standing in line at the Bank or Grocery Store, I noticed that I am singing right along with the band in my mind.
Now, since the songs I tend to listen to in the car early in the morning (“Early” is relative, don’t forget!) are Christian in nature, I tend to be singing some Golden Oldie Hymns, either much to the delight or chagrin of those around me, depending on how good of voice I am in that particular day. Most people are polite enough not to complain, and I get to Bless them not only with a free concert but with the Spiritual Truths and Wisdom I sing about.
Well, there you have it – – a number of ways to accomplish Subliminal Witnessing! Now, all you have to do is determine which ones fit your personality and lifestyle and have at it – – after all, it IS The Great Commission!
