…THAT DESCRIBES ME!

There are a number of axioms and adages around that we either live by and/or refer to on a regular basis. Some of my favorite ones include K.I.S.S. – Keep it Simple, Senor; A Stitch in Time Saves Nine; and The Best way to Resolve a Problem is to Avoid it! There is one, however, that puts a spring in my step and a smile on my face, as it does, in fact, describe me: If you want something done in the quickest, easiest fashion give it to a conscientious lazy man!

Now, the first key word in this particular phrase is “conscientious.” WEBSTER’S tell us that conscientious means “wishing to do what is right, especially to do one’s work or duty well and thoroughly.” The second key word is “lazy,” and here is what WEBSTER’S has to say about that: unwilling to work or use energy. While it appears that the two are contradictory, in some rare cases, like with me!, they exist very well in concert. Let me explain how that works.

       There are so many things that I don’t like to do that it may appear to an outsider that I am lazy, and yet, those who know me well and have worked with me think just the opposite. This is, no doubt, due to my adherence to Colossians 3:23 – And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; As a result, while I do do a good job, I tend to take the path of least resistance as long as it results in a job “well done.”

And that brings us full circle to: If you want something done in the quickest, easiest fashion give it to a conscientious lazy man. The GOOD NEWS is that God used that theory in His realm of Creation. Think about it: Where do you think the expressions “He made a bee-line” and “As the crow flies” come from? Bees and Birds take the shortest route, the path of least resistance, if you would, when they fly. You know what, maybe that’s what my dad meant when he said that we had to have a talk about the Birds and the Bees. Or, maybe not!
