LET HYMN BLESS YOU

BRINGING IN THE SHEEVES

By Knowles Shaw

On September 4, 2023 we will be celebrating Labor Day for the 129th time as a nation. There are many scriptures which deal with Labor and workers, but we think one especially deals with Laboring for the Kingdom of God, and that is Psalm 126:6 “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” As a result, we believe that the Hymn that will Bless you most this issue is Knowles Shaw’s BRINGING IN THE SHEAVES.

Born in 1834, Knowles Shaw was of Scottish extraction and spent his early life in Rush County, Indiana where he became an accomplished fiddliest. In the middle of a dance he was playing for he got converted and stopped playing very minute!

       Shaw almost immediately entered the ministry of the Christian Church. Possessing wonderful vocal powers he became known as the “singing evangelist,” and wrote a multitude of hymns, one of the last being BRINING IN THE SHEEVES!

       Shaw’s last church meeting was held in Dallas, Texas in May of 1878. On June 7th of that year he was killed in a railroad accident. It is reported that he baptized over eleven thousand persons. Below are the words of that wonderful old song about Spiritual Harvesting that we have Knowles Shaw to thank for!

Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness,
Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eve;
Waiting for the harvest, and the time of reaping,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

Chorus
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves,
Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves,
Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows,
Fearing neither clouds nor winter’s chilling breeze;
By and by the harvest and the labour ended,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

Chorus
Going forth with weeping, sowing for the Master,
Though the loss sustained our spirit often grieves;
When our weeping’s over, He will bid us welcome,
We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves.

Chorus
