HOW DID JUDE KNOW ABOUT ….?Floyd Allen, Editor-in-Chief GOD’S GOOD NEWS GAZETTE

There are a lot of truly intriguing verses in THE BIBLE, as you undoubtedly already know. One of those verses, to me at least, is Jude 1:9“Even Michael, the chief angel, didn’t dare to insult the devil, when the two of them were arguing about the body of Moses.] All Michael said was, “The Lord will punish you!” CEV Before we get to the “intriguing” part, let’s put the verse in Biblical perspective.

As you will recall, Moses did not get to go the Promised Land because of the story we find in Numbers 20:1-12The people of Israel arrived at the Zin Desert during the first month and set up camp near the town of Kadesh. It was there that Miriam died and was buried. The Israelites had no water, so they went to Moses and Aaron and complained, “Moses, we’d be better off if we had died along with the others in front of the Lord’s sacred tent. You brought us into this desert, and now we and our livestock are going to die! Egypt was better than this horrible place. At least there we had grain and figs and grapevines and pomegranates. But now we don’t even have any water.” Moses and Aaron went to the entrance to the sacred tent, where they bowed down. The Lord appeared to them in all of his glory 7-8 and said, “Moses, get your walking stick. Then you and Aaron call the people together and command that rock to give you water. That’s how you will provide water for the people of Israel and their livestock.” Moses obeyed and took his stick from the sacred tent. 10 After he and Aaron had gathered the people around the rock, he said, “Look, you rebellious people, and you will see water flow from this rock!” 11 He raised his stick in the air and struck the rock two times. At once, water gushed from the rock, and the people and their livestock had water to drink. 12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you refused to believe in my power, these people did not respect me. And so, you will not be the ones to lead them into the land I have promised.”

So, with Moses not being able to go to the Promised Land, we find in Deuteronomy 34:5-6 that his life ran its natural course:

5 So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. 6 And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

This is where the “intriguing” part starts to take shape: Moses died, God buried him, and no one knows where. According to Jude, before the burial took place Michael and Satan “contended” over the body. Now, the “intriguing” part is: How did Jude know about this? You see, nowhere else in Scripture is this story ever mentioned!!!

At this point, I am going to give you what I think happened and how Jude became privy to this information! Now, remember, THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION … IT IS NOT SUPPORTED BY SCRIPTURE!!! As long as you understand that, read on!!! I think it went something like this …

One day, when Jesus was about sixteen (It is believed that Joseph had died when Jesus was around 14), Mary said something to the effect of,

“Jesus, I have to run out for a few minutes and get some matzo balls, will you keep an eye on the kids for me? And tell Jude a story … you know how much he enjoys it when you do.”

So, good son that he was, Jesus took a few minutes off from working on the table he was making for Omar the Tent Maker and spent some time with his siblings. To fulfill the rest of Mary’s request, he told Jude an action story of how Michael and Satan buckled for the body of Moses. Jude, who was only around four or five at the time, never forgot the story, and relayed it on to the rest of us when he wrote his epistle that ended up in the New Testament.

Well, that’s my version of what happened! The GOOD NEWS is that regardless of how he found out, Jude shared with us that it is not wise to take on Satan alone, but, rather, we should call upon God to be our tag team partner when we confront him!

(Editor’s Note: If you have a thought as to how Jude found out about the struggle between Satan and Michael let us know – – we would be interested in seeing what you have to say!!!)
